Gameplay

Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts is a side scrolling platformer based in a fantasy world full of magic. The player assumes control of Arthur and sets out on a quest to save the Princess.

Arthur starts the game in an ordinary suit of armor and a throwing lance with the aim to get to the end of the level. As you progress towards the end you will be confronted by enemies and environmental dangers. If you take damage, Arthurs armor is removed and signifies that you can take one more hit before death. Armor can be repaired and upgraded by finding the pick ups in the levels.

Weapons are also changeable by finding hidden treasure chests or by killing certain foes. Each weapon is unique and has it's own attack pattern, these weapons are also upgraded based on your current armor status.

The game is made up of 7 unique levels and sticking to the traditional Ghost 'N Ghouls concept, the player must complete the circuit twice in order to finish the game completely. The levels are very similar the second time round however it is slightly harder with a few small changes.

Once the player achieves the feat of finishing every level twice, they finish the game and are rewarded with the end sequence.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 2 point

Super Ghosts 'n Ghouls is the story of the mighty swordsman and Knight Arthur and his journey across a dangerous land. A quest to save a beautiful blue haired princess from the demon forces that now expel a presence of terror among across the land that they both love.

The game is an action platformer with 8 unique levels packed full of danger in the form of both enemies and environment. The narrative begins when the game powered on and then continues briefly at the beginning of the first level. There is no dialogue but instead a rather creepy cut scene showing the capture of Princess Guinevere before Arthur's very eyes. Once you begin to play there is no real story elements inserted within until you reach the half way mark of the game and once again in the final moments when you complete the quest.

This side scrolling platformer feel is based on a previous Nintendo entry Ghost 'N Ghouls and is a known to be rather challenging. This action game has plenty of dangers among a plethora of enemy types and a world that transforms above and below Arthur has you frantically scramble to safety. A time limit is also provided as a reminder to keep pushing through the realm's dangers.

A boss creature patiently awaits at the end of every level as the final challenge before proceeding forward to the next destination and checkpointing your progress. These battles are tough and require even more patience and bravery due to facing creatures larger than Arthur.

The gameplay also follows the tradition created by the early game and requires the player to traverse the world not once but twice and face off against everything a second time. This extends the game into over time and the resistance level is turned up slightly to burn the player a few more times.

Controls and Features - 2 point

Super Ghosts 'N Ghouls is a pretty fast paced game that requires practice to master the controls. The two button basic jump and attack system might sound boring, however it is far from that when matched against the dangers on screen. There are three main fundamentals for surviving this game and those are movement, attacking and jumping.

Attacking is the easiest and requires you to hit the button when required. Movement comes in second as it's just on the d-pad and usually requires left and right with some crouching and climbing but that's based on how the player traverses the course. Jumping is the real nightmare factor and that's because Arthur can maintains his trajectory the moment he is in flight. This means that when Arthur jumps his timing must be perfect at the moment of leaving and landing because the same distance is covered each time.

The game's single player mode features an action packed challenging story with 8 levels that you traverse twice making it a playable 16. Hidden among these levels are treasure chests and storage containers that hold power ups of one form or another. The games weapon system is interchangeable and is one of the found power ups. There are a few different weapons that can also be mixed with armor upgrades to create a stronger form of attack.

Design and Difficulty - 2 points

Super Ghost 'N Ghouls has an older sibling and the game is heavily based on it's success. The popularity gain from the NES version allowed this version to be similar but come in the form of an upgrade rather than an entire new adventure, however the game is still well made and has plenty of great design aspects.

Graphically the game is very clean and has nice shading with the use of a varying color palette. There are numerous enemy sprites that appear throughout the game and each one of them looked dangerous and appealing at the same time. There animations a smooth, even the ones that change form in front of the players eyes.

The soundtrack for this game is alluring and pleasing even when you hear the same tune several times due to dying. Each level not only has a individually composed track but also several small sound effect packets that bring it all together and create an exciting adventure.

This game is hard and many gamers put it in the too hard basket and leave it there. It is definitely a game that requires focus and patience. The difficulty lies mainly in the jumping thanks to the set movement pattern but with practice the game can be beaten.

There are options to adjust the difficulty and player life count which can help you get a little further on the journey but be warned, don't play on beginner as it's a trap. Adjust the life count to maximum and set off because adjusting the difficulty changes the amounts of hits enemies require to be destroyed.

Fun and Summary - 👍 +1

Super Ghosts 'N Ghouls is a super challenging game that I have only ever really beaten it once and that was for review. It took me several days of practice, full of fun, frustration and rewarding gameplay as I pushed further and overcame  the dangers.

The game is a gauntlet run which will destroy the weak and reward only the strongest and bravest swordsman. It's from a time where difficulty was important for replay value and well retail value and that's why this one is tough as nails. Capcom didn't want you to beat it and buy another competitors game.

Overall with everything being said, it is an enjoyable experience for those gamers looking to challenge themselves, however if you have played the previous games it's very similar and doesn't really offer anything new.
