Gameplay

HyperZone's gameplay is a mixture of shooting and racing while on a rail. The game is set in the future and you are piloting a vehicle at highspeed along a track full of obstacles and dangers. The objective is to reach the end of each area and battle the creatures that try and stop you from finishing your mission.

The game is played by controlling a vehicle up, down, left and right on screen to dodge static objects and incoming projectiles. You are also armed with a gun so you can destroy targets that you shoot enough. Doing so rewards points and a certain amount of points gained will give you a bonus life.

As you finish the levels you are also given new vehicles which not only look different but also have their own style of weapons. Once you complete 8 levels the game restarts from the beginning with the player keeping the final ship. The game then continues on a loop until you run out of lives.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 2 points

HyperZone is a futuristic game set in the year 2089 on the desolate surfaces of an asteroid belt. Your mission is to race to the end of each area and survive an encounter with the boss before moving on and eventually clearing the 8 levels. The game is a hybrid shooter racing game developed by Hal Laboratory and released in 1991.

The game doesn't offer any story elements unfortunately which means you are on your on once you get into the ship. You can piece together a small story if you watch the environments and face the bosses but overall no added story elements from the developers.

The gameplay however doesn't really need a story because of it's fast and furious approach as you blast your way through lane ways at high speeds. It has a little bit of an arcade feel and focuses on survival but also getting as many points as possible by destroying the targets on screen.

The 8 environments are all great different and offer their own challenges in the form of static and moving obstacles and enemies. The boss fights are quite unique and challenging and the game repeats once finished giving you instant replay value as you continue to bank up your score.

Controls and Features - 2 point

This game uses every button on the controller however it's the same two actions placed on various locations to suit each player. You can either shoot or brake using the buttons of your choice. I prefer the L and R shoulder buttons because naturally my fingers rest on those buttons.

The game offers a standard and reverse mode which delivers 8 levels on a cycle unless you die before the end. The difference between the two modes is that the steering becomes inverted and adds that challenge.

The game sticks to keeping it simple and only offers a single player main mode with the mentioned options. As you play however, you do get access to new ships which keep the fun flowing due to improved looks and firepower.

Design and Difficulty - 2 points

A simple design pays off for the team with this Hal Laboratory published game. They kept to an original concept and went with it and by not over doing the features, a polished hybrid like no other emerges.

The graphics are really well put together and even when moving at high speeds they packages remain tight and complete. Distant objects are a little blurry but as you approach they naturally gain clarity making them nice to look at. The ship's move very fluidly on screen and don't seem to miss a beat.

One of the best things is the music and the fact that every level has it's own uniquely composed sound track that suits the look and feel. Composer Jun Ishikawa has worked on a few Hal Laboratory games and nails it on this one.

The game only has 8 levels but each level doubles in difficulty when reached. The further you get into the levels, the more static and moving obstacles are present but new lanes and more projectiles are also added.

Fun and Summary - 👍 + 1

Hyper Zone is a fast game that is perfect for a single player looking to get into something with some adrenaline and action quickly if they only have a small time to play. The game launches out of the gates immediately and takes you on a high speed action adventure that plays over an hour unless you succeed and want to push on further for the higher scores.
