Story and Gameplay - 1 point
Street Racer is Ubi Soft's attempt to make a hybrid fighting racing game that would rival other racing games such as Mario Kart. The game features lot's of cool things, however a storyline is not one of them.
Focusing 100% on gameplay, this game brings an exciting and more adult take on kart racing. The game is faster and more furious than other titles and boasts being the first racing and fighting game. The go kart racing makes up for 80% of gameplay as the fighting is in the form of road rage and you attack as you drive, not get out of your kart and beat each other up.
The gameplay for this title is unique for the fact you can attack, defend and race however it lacks any real depth and loses traction when it comes to single player experiences however it has the ability for up to 4 players to simultaneously be on screen which is a driving factor for replay value.
This kart racer is quite complexed control wise and does require you to become familiar with the whole layout as every button does something differently. You can simply hold 'B' and steer to win, however the AI will attempt to pound you making it a wise choice to learn how to fight back. It's easy to swing hits left and right with the shoulder buttons however each character has their own moves assigned to the colored buttons.
Driving is simple and frantic because the brake button is actually down on the d-pad, you hold it to reverse. This leads to loads of slipping and sliding as you try to drift the corners and collect the pickups in front of you.
This game features eight playable characters who are from around the world and have all come together for this ultimate throw down. They are all unique in stat points and bring their own selection of moves and race tracks. There are a total of 24 tracks which is 3 alternative tracks per racer.
Multiple modes are on offer and make up for most of the replay value once you complete the championships. Each mode is very different and offers a unique play experience. The modes also support up to 4 players which can make for a fun time if you have the correct hardware.

Design and Difficulty - 2 points
Street Racer's concept is bold and boasts fighting mixed racing, however it's really just a racing game with attack and defensive moves that aren't projectiles. The overall idea is cool however it is definitely marketed to sound different to what it really is.
Graphically the game does look quite messy when looking at the tracks. They are all very flat and even have flat pick up items, which make it less attractive to the eye than 3D objects. This also leads to them being hard to see and often easy missed. The character designs are much neater in comparison and due to focusing mainly on them and where your going, the blurriness of the track can be forgiven.
Sound wise the game is pretty amazing and smashes cartoon sound effects with good race tunes and ultimately creates a pleasing experience. The overall combination of sounds works very well and nothing is really overpowering or annoying like some other racing titles.
Difficulty wise, this game is quite tough when beginning out. The handling of the vehicles is the main factor as they slip and slide around making it hard to maintain speed. Most of the modes are unforgiving to newbies, however the difficulty can be adjusted using the options.
Championship mode comes in the form of three main cups and those are bronze, silver and gold. These cups represent the difficulty level preset and determine which courses are on the rotation. The harder courses are in the harder cups but they are usually alternates of other courses so some issues are present constantly. You do not have to be the best racer to win anyway, because points are also given out for doing extra things. These points can often mean that you receive the same amount of points for coming third rather than first.

Fun and Summary - 👍 +1
Street Racer is a really fast and frantic racing game that contains lots of little intense racing circuits with adrenaline pumping action. It's not really a fighting game as it boasts to be however it does bring a nice element of attack and defense with it by removing projectiles.
The five different game modes give the game a little more replay value, however this is best played with other players once completed the championships. It has a nice selection of characters and race tracks that has potential for a few hours of gameplay at a nice fast pace with a little more of an adult theme.
