Shaq Fu Story Mode Gameplay Sample
Story and Gameplay - 1 point
Shaq Fu is a fighting game that has 3 different modes to play and luckily one of them is a story mode, however it can be finished extremely fast and even for a non-speed runner like myself, it can be done in under 30 minutes.
The story itself is quite non-sense and sends Shaq on a journey into an unknown world to save an unknown person. Not sure why he decided to do it, maybe he is just a nice guy. The story is literally less than 10 battles and which can be won be only using the one move. The narrative is shared at the beginning, end and between fights, however it is quite weak and lacks any really driving factors.
This fighting game has no real appeal for a player as it's quite short and easy that you don't really need to practice or play for hours to get better. The fighting is weak and relies on learning a few power moves while spamming other buttons to hit where possible.
They multiple game modes do give it a little more appeal for replay value however the only difference is the choice of fighters. Everything else remains the same and really misses the net.
The game uses a similar layout to most fighting games and has the controller broken up between fast and power attacks. The basic attacks are pretty poor at taking down the opponent however it's easy to spam when you need.
The power moves are quite hard to activate because of the touchiness of the controller movements. I found that the basic power moves for Shaq would activate around 60% of the time which ain't bad however does mean exposure to enemy hits.
This game has 7 playable characters which is less than the other Sega console versions unfortunately. The Sega version also has 3 more levels to visit and battle at.
The game modes are only real mentionable features and they just alter the way the fighting happens. It's sadly a really small game and has nothing to really offer for single players once you finish the story mode.
Design and Difficulty - 2 points
Shaq Fu has great animations and music however it fails to hit the board in other design aspects such as length, replay value, graphics and overall playability.
The in game graphics for this version are quite messy and not overly appealing to look at. The characters are also quite small on the screen compared to the level itself, meaning that the finer things like facial features are lost.
Each level has a unique look and they are themed around the opponent you choose in story mode and can also be chosen as an option while playing the other modes. The level designs have a little more detail and colors than the fighters. Each level also has a unique soundtrack produced by Raphael Gesqua, they are all quite exciting and tense, as to be expected for a fighting game.
This games difficulty is based on the story mode and that is quite easy to finish once you learn the two basic power moves for Shaq. Even though you can't throw a basketball you can smash enemies with your lightning-fast shuriken that was enough to defeat every enemy even with it's 60% activation rate.
You can pretty much nullify all incoming damage by using the defend skill, however this tends to make rounds end with a time out which awards the fighter with the most health. This can be used as a tactic which makes the game quite easy and boring because you can cower in the corner after dealing enough damage with projectiles.

Fun and Summary - 👎
Shaq-Fu's concept sounded like it would be fun but due to the lack of game length and overall skills needed to succeed, this game sadly doesn't qualify for the bonus fun point.
It's a very cheap game and at the time I bought it, toilet rolls cost more in store. It's a game that I had to get to complete my goal but if I didn't need them all, I wouldn't own it.
It's a fighting game with a sports game price tag and that's because it just isn't very desirable. If you want to try Shaq-Fu, get it on another console or try the newer version that was released in 2018 called Shaq-Fu: A legend Reborn.
