Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 1 point

Road Riot 4WD is an arcade driving game which was ported to the Super Nintendo entertainment system in 1992. Due to it's origin it has no story elements and only focuses on the racing style game play.

The game is set during a crazy 4WD buddy world circuit event and the player is one of the racers. You are strapped into a buggy equipped to go off road and also with missiles to knock your opponents out of the way.

The gameplay is set race to race and you get to choose where you want to go next. Each race has a new host based on the location and their course has unique dangers. The goal is to win all the races and cash out at the end of the circuit with the most money.

The game is really short and can be finished in under an hour. The only reward for completing all the races is a shot at the leaderboard which is why it stays as an arcade racer.

Controls and Features - 1 point

This game is as simple as it comes and anyone can jump right in and play. It mainly uses the basics of driving and relies on two buttons and some steering. Very easy to play however on screen the controls may reflect differently as they are very touchy vehicles and expect plenty of crashes from over steering.

The game features 11 race courses which even though they look different, they feel the same apart from the unique obstacles. The character hosts are quite funny and their biography is all tongue and cheek humor however there isn't else much going for this game.

Design and Difficulty - 1 points

Road Riot 4WD is a really easy game to win because of the unlimited missiles and the fact your vehicle clearly goes faster because it is red. Australia is a hard level due to the rocks that destroy you when you hit them however the AI hit them as well so you just need to drive off faster than them.

Design wise this game is annoying because it is always set in a split screen display. Yes, even when you are playing alone, the screen is split and the rival racers are on the bottom half. It's quite distracting firstly and secondly seems like someone just got to lazy to remove it during the port over to home console.

The sounds for this one are also pretty annoying because they are loud and obnoxious. This games base volume is set high and they focus on just the car sounds and missiles in game which creates a droning sound mixed with cartoon pews.

Fun and Summary - 👍 + 1

Road Riot is fun for a couple of hours as single player and with friends. It doesn't have much to offer as depth but does provide a small fun burst of racing excitement full of crashes and somersaults.

The fast paced uncontrollable action on screen is definitely a riot and is what helps brings this one up a point after the disappointment I felt with decisions to keep split screen on and have no in game music.
