Realm is a fantasy platform shooter set in a distant future full of war and death as aliens invade Earth. The player takes control of a Biomech soldier and has a goal to shoot their way through 5 danger filled levels with the aim to save mankind.
The game play is set in a 2-D perspective and is made up of levels that require the player to follow a path to the end. That path is not necessarily linear however there are set end points when you destroy a the boss of the realm you are in.
The game has a weapon system that is based on finding the weapon and using it as one of two weapons you can carry at once. Each weapon has limited ammo which can be filled by finding the same weapon pickup or by finding crystals which release ammo for whichever weapon you have equipped. All weapons can fire in a multi directional pattern which covers a full 360 degree around the player.
Some levels also contain vehicles on rails which increase the speed and danger as you proceed further into the level set on a certain trajectory.
Once the player completes all the realms and defeats the boss the game ends and you are rewarded.

Realm Gameplay Sample
Story and Gameplay - 2 point
Realm is a platform shooter game released exclusively to the Super Nintendo in 1997. The game is set in the year 5069 and an alien force is invading Earth and you are mankind's only hope. It's a pretty generic story to be honest their are no real in game story elements that tell this narrative, I only got that information from the games sleeve design.
The gameplay doesn't need a story for it to be enjoyed because each of the 5 different realms visited are so unique with their environment and the enemies you will engage in battle.
Realm is an action shooter and the gameplay focuses on the basic goal of blasting everything to bits and reaching the end goal after defeating the realm boss. The concept is pretty simple however with this title you can shoot in a 360 degree pattern with a variety of weapons that are found through the levels. They vary the shooting style from guided lasers, spread shot, straight laser beams and quick machine gun sessions.
Realms concept is quite simple and even though it uses a major portion of the controller it remains simple to play as well. Most of the pad work is in the movement, jumping and shooting which is quite simple because those buttons are on located near each other.
The controller layout also allows the use of the shoulder buttons which pauses all movement and changes the d-pad into pure aiming mode which opens a full 360 degree shooting pattern. This is a technique that needs practicing but does come in handy for those tough spots.
Feature wise Realm doesn't have anything to other than the main game and that features 5 levels that can be finished between 1-2 hours once you get good. The main really focuses on the shooting element and that's where all the cool stuff is like the types of weapons and how they all work.
Design and Difficulty - 3 points
Realm is set in a distant future which means anything the designer's could imagine might come true. They could of seen the future and created it but it seems like it may be a really random and strange time for those ahead of us.
The game starts of in a forest full of flying demons, massive aggressive trees, fires that chase you, things that climb trees and a dragon. It's a pretty crazy rush out the gate and it only get's weirder further into the game. It's unique enemy designs are strange but really well designed and present well on screen.
The sounds and music of this game are pretty sci fi and sound really awesome. The explosions are my favorite because enemies explode when they die. Each level also brings it's own sound track which suits the environment and situation you get from everything around you.
Difficulty wise this game is terribly hard when you first get to a new level. You are given unlimited continues which is fantastic however there are no passwords. The levels are quite large which means some checkpoints are spread out and it's quite a back track after death however it presents a chance to get more ammo.
Each level has several challenging enemies along the route which will force a roadblock on you until defeated. These are definitely the life takers when you first meet but with practice they get easier and easier.

Fun and Summary - 👍 + 1
Realm is a very fun game for it's crazy random approach when it come's to environments and enemies. It's lack of story means that it does fall short on some excitement avenues but when you get further into the game after being killed several times, that becomes the reward.
Once I got some practice and worked out which weapons I liked to have for each section of the levels I was able to beat the game. I really enjoyed the creativity put into all the elements and thought the pace of the action was fantastic.
Realm was released towards the end of the Super Nintendo's life which means the developers could push further than the earlier platformers and this shows in the end product.
RetroRating: 8 out of 10
