Gameplay

Pinocchio is a platformer game based on the Disney classic animated film of the same name. It tells the story of how Gepetto a lonely puppet maker wishes for his creation Pinocchio to be a real boy and how the Blue Fairy agrees to do so aslong as Pinocchio learns how to be a real boy.

The game is played over several levels that are all based on the film and allow the player to experience scenes such as Easy Street, Pleasure Island and inside Monstro.

The play style varies a little between levels which alters the controls and objective. Once you finish the story you complete the game and get the reward of becoming a real boy.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 2 point

Like other Walt Disney games released on Super Nintendo, this game has a great amount of effort put into the story telling elements. It features a book style narrative which tells the story between levels. The story itself is based on the film and sticks pretty close to that plot line but does include a little extra fun.

Each level has it's own playstyle and controls which keeps this game fun and exciting. At the beginning when you are first heading to school you can only move and jump. However as you get further you will experience a simon says style level, a roller coaster level and some side scrolling parts alongside the original platformer concept.

The varying gameplay approach is pretty awesome to see in this game and it was enough to keep me playing it till the end. Some parts of the game however do feel a bit unnecessary.

Controls and Features - 1 point

The controls are simple throughout the game but they do alter themselves slightly based on which section you are playing. Most of the game is played with the d-pad and two buttons which is simple enough but you do get the chance to use most of the controller on some levels.

The game like other Disney titles has a load of collectibles in every level which aren't needed to finish the level but are help you along the way. The way they are laid it is deliberate and will make you spend plenty of time searching if you want them all, however there is no reward for collecting 100%.

Another mentionable feature is that you do get to play as Jiminy cricket briefly for one level which is cool. The level itself is not so exciting but at least you get the chance to change characters.

Design and Difficulty - 2 points

Pinocchio is a fun game that allows you to play in a variety of styles and has a great story. The game is put together fairly well once again by Virgin and Disney however there are a few issues that I have.

The game looks pretty rough around the edges to start off. The animations of the characters are great because it brings the world to life however the sprites themselves are are bit fuzzy and not as tight pixel wise. I feel they wanted more movement and focused on that over the quality of characters.

The sound track for this game is really enjoyable and definitely has that Disney feel. It has a variety of emotion affecting music and will have you cheerful, worried, scared and even a little fearful as you get chased by Monstro. The sound effects are also quite on point and really sound amazing and magical.

Difficulty wise it is a bit of a stroll in the park once you attempt it a handful of times. The enemies are all easy to see and don't really aim at you until you get close which means you can avoid combat and just move on. You can change the difficulty if you are having trouble but I found that your experience is limited to only a few levels until you try it on the regular difficulty.

Fun and Summary - 👍+1

Pinocchio ain't a terrible game and is pretty good compared to some other of the Disney creations for the 16 bit era. The change of gameplay is great and keeps it exciting even though the game feels a little unpolished with it's graphics.

I found myself smiling for the majority of the time I played this game, there were a few moments that annoyed me like the dancing part, however overall the game comes together nicely and tells a heart warming interactive story for all ages to enjoy.
