Gameplay

  • 1-P Normal Mode:
Pac-Attack is a falling tile puzzle game with a Pac-man twist. This game uses a combination of blocks and ghosts as falling tiles which can be rotated and placed by the player. The aim is to make horizontal lines to delete them, while setting your ghosts correctly so that when a Pac-Man tile appears he can gobble them up for points and space to keep playing. The aim of the game is to stay alive for as long as possible while deleting and eating the tiles to get points to hit the high score board.

  • Puzzle mode
Puzzle mode is a 100 level challenge mode that uses preset patterns as levels for you to complete using the least amount of Pac-Man tiles available. You get limited Pac-Man clearing tiles per level so you are required to learn how to lay each tile to create the best ghost gobbling path to get the pass of approval onto the next level.

  • 2-P Mode
The multiplayer option for this game is a battle mode which puts two players in a pit fight using the falling tiles as a way to earn points but to also bury your opponent. In this mode a player who deletes a line or gobbles ghosts gets the advantage of having things adding to the other players screen, which if fills out up makes them lose. So the aim is to survive by deleting and eating lines to bury your opponent with your disposed of tiles.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 1 point

Pac-Attack is an arcade style puzzle game featuring both 1 player and 2 player options. It doesn't feature a story but plays like a mixture of Pac-Man and Tetris.

The objective is to stack the tiles correctly so you can send a Pac-Man to eat all the ghosts and the score the most points possible without capping out on the top of the screen. So mix that with deleting horizontal lines similar to Tetris and you get this game, another similar arcade game that tries to make something and falls short.

The only difference this game brings is the variety of ways to play however it is pretty much the same game but with a slightly different objective making it rather shallow for new and exciting content.

Controls and Features - 1 point

Pac-Attack pretty much plays like every other falling tile game on the Super Nintendo and is all about moving, flipping and then placing the tiles. There isn't much going on controller wise to flip out over as it's pretty much a one button party.

Puzzle mode is probably the most stand out feature of this game and that is because it kept me guessing and interested rather than anxious about my onscreen survival. It has 100 levels that are very well thought out off and even if they play in the same style, they vary in preset placement which makes it a whole new level each time. For those who are keen there is a password system that will help you return at a later date if needed, which is possible because the game did make me rage out a few times.

Design and Difficulty - 3 points

Pac-Attack is similar to other puzzle games like I've already stated however it does stand out in my eyes thanks to the little things they have done well. It's a game you can jump straight into and if you like what you see and feel you can continue or if you hate it, leave it at that.

The little things like using the Pac-Man tile and gobbling the ghosts away feels great about this game and makes me enjoy it slightly more than others. I think it's because it's another added layer to the game which plays on a character that we already know and enjoy. Dr Mario tried it but I didn't find that as exciting as I did this title.

The pounding soundtrack is one to get you on the edge of your seat as you sweat bullets when you see those tiles coming. The music is louder than the tiles which means you feel the intensity building as you try to stay afloat. This game makes you feel on edge by using the music and I really enjoyed that because it created an atmosphere that took me back to the good old garage days.

The game difficulty is all set by the player so it's always fun and friendly unless you ask for more challenge. Puzzle mode does require some logical thinking and problem solving to make all 100 levels but you can take a break and think about it before coming back which makes it easier to overcome than other games without passwords.

Fun and Summary - 👍+1

Pac-Attack is pretty fun for it's current price online. It's one of those games many people look away from because it's a puzzle game or is known to not have much story or action.

Well guess what it's not really meant to since it is a puzzle game but take a leap of faith and try the 100 levels of brain twisting challenges that await. It's actually nice to feel like I have the brain capacity to play and complete all the levels because it's actually rare to see games like this out there in the modern world.
