Gameplay

Ms. Pac-Man is a classic arcade game ported over to home consoles including the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The aim of the game is to navigate the maze and eat all the pellets which completes the level. However, you need to watch out for the ghosts who chase you and try to take your lives.

You can eat the mega pellets which are usually found in the corners, this will give you a short burst of invulnerability and you can eat the ghosts which sends them back to the center box.

If you choose to use it, you can also turn the Pac Booster one which is a little turbo boost for Ms. Pac-Man which makes escaping the ghosts easier.

If the player manages to complete all 36 mazes, they are rewarded with a small story sequence and the game is completed.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 1 point

Ms. Pac-Man was originally a 3rd party attempt to improve on the already popular Pac-Man arcade unit. The introduction of Ms. Pac-Man may of been messy legally but she bought with her great improvements such as new maps, warp tunnels, new sounds and a new look.

The Super Nintendo version of Ms. Pac-Man is another attempt at improving on the original concept and actual has even more mazes and somewhat of a story line. It plays similar to other Pac-Man titles and is all about eating the pellets and surviving the mazes. If you're lucky enough to survive several mazes you are given a small look into Ms. Pac-Man's personal life with the clever use of small scenes.

The gameplay is rather straight forward and if you have played the classics, you should already be familiar with how it all works. A few differences are the story which is given out over the 36 levels, you get continues to attempt finishing it all and of course the Pac-Booster which is a turbo.

Controls and Features - 1 point

Ms. Pac-Man loves it when you take control and she even disobeys a little to keep it interesting. The game is simple, hold the direction you want to go and if you want to turn, hold the direction before the corner. It sounds very easy however it's sometimes there feels like there is a little delay which lead to me missing corners and smashing into ghosts.

This game features 36 playable levels for a single player experience which is coupled with the little story elements to keep it fun. The map changes are frequent enough if you are good enough to keep it interesting even with the fact there is no background music.

The additional multiplayer modes are fun to play and provide a little bit of extra enjoyment if you have someone willing to play with you. You can do this with one or two controllers and is simple fun.

Design and Difficulty - 2 points

Ms. Pac-Man is a fun game however there are a few things that make it lack the energy and feel of the early games on arcade and even some of the other console versions. The Super Nintendo version lacks any soundtrack and made me feel like my game was damaged until I started gobbling pellets. There were no sounds what so ever from switching on the game until starting eating.

Once you're playing the sounds get increasingly more annoying as all you hear is the pellet sounds and ghosts. It's not the most exciting when your at home compared to the arcade which has the atmosphere pumping around you. I ended up turning the volume down and playing my own music to get my in the mood to smash out all the levels.

I had a hard time completing all the levels of this one because I lacked any real Pac-Man hours before playing this. The maps are simple right angles turns however it's more than making the turns and setting a strategy because some maps you get to do a few times in a row. The game does offer several continues which you can use to start again at the level you died at, however they are limited so some skill is required to finish this challenge.

Fun and Summary - 👍+1

Ms. Pac-Man is a really enjoyable game but this version could of definitely been better with the addition of some music and other sound effects because when you arcade games at home, you lack the environmental sounds and atmosphere which makes this game get a little slow and boring when grinding it out.

It's a fun game to play and a classic so if you haven't tried this style of Pac-Man, give it a go and you might enjoy it. It does offer a little more like multiplayer and the story elements which makes it more desirable as an arcade game.
