Gameplay

F-Zero is a futuristic Grand-Prix that challenges the player to face off against a group of Inter-galactic racers to prove that they are the best and win the fame and fortune that comes with it. The vehicles used a high speed hover crafts that can move at speeds up to 500km/h and must navigate through the varying track designs while avoiding taking to much damage and being destroyed.

To win a race you must remain in a position that is 'safe' for every lap and then cross the line either in first, second or third. You can choose one of four racers and the non chosen ones are your main rivals in the line up. As you finish a lap the 'safe' limit is reduced and knocks out any races below that point and those above it keep racing until the process repeats for all the laps required. Be warned that there are also other racers on the track which will block you and try to make you lose your lead.

Each race is based in a location and has it's own unique track elements and sound track. As you progress further into the championships, you may race on a modified version of a previous track which alters itself to add more challenge. Complete all the championships to beat the game.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 1 point

F-Zero took 2 years to make it to the PAL region and that gave them time to improve on what already existed, however during this period there was no story elements added to the game which makes the primarily a single-player racing game that focuses only on the gameplay. This is quite disappointing because the box art has a comic strip on the back which could of easily been built on in game.

The gameplay for this high speed racer is great but rather small overall. The concept of the game is to complete the three championship cups that are available to prove that you are the top racer. The championships offer several levels and take around 30 minutes each to complete based on your success rate.

In this racing game, all you do is race and dodge other vehicles and dangers. The game remains the same throughout and does not offer any real change in gameplay apart from additional track dangers. It's a pretty small game and sadly has no real story but it does have a high speed fun play style which is very enjoyable.

Controls and Features - 2 points

Controlling one of these high speed machines is quite easy and uses a majority of the control pad if you choose. You can easily navigate the circuits using the accelerator and break but once you get into the advanced stuff, the strafing buttons on top become useful for dodging small obstacles.

The vehicles are quite sensitive to the d-pad input so you have to be careful not to over do it when turning those sharp corners or you will become a bouncing pinball if you are unlucky enough to hit the wall.

This great game is a very exciting racing game but unfortunately it does not support multi-player modes which would of been superb. A game like this definitely should have the option to face of against a friend since it's a futuristic themed game.

Design and Difficulty - 3 points

This game has had plenty of effort put into the overall design thanks to the incredible team behind it. The game flows very well together and has a blend of on track excitement plus amazing sound effects and music tracks.

Each track has it's own unique design and often has something that the other tracks do not. An example of this is Death Winds which has a sideways pushing effect to simulate gusts of wind. Each track also has a uniquely composed track that is designed to not only set the feeling for the race but emulate the world your on.

The game starts with a beginner skill level which can be used for all three cups and that makes this 15 track racer quite fun and sets a baseline difficulty. I found the beginner difficulty to fit perfectly for my skills as I had no prior experience before this. If you find this to easily you will be pleasantly surprised to hear that you have two harder options for more challenge.

Fun and Summary - 👍 +1

F-Zero is quite a fun game to play but I wish there was a little more replay value included. I feel that there could be a few more vehicle choices but the available ones do offer unique statistics which suit different play styles. It could also of used a two player mode which I think most people would agree with me on.

Overall I feel that F-Zero is a must have game for any SNES collector. It's a really fun game for a single-player looking to enjoy a quick race session. The option to choose any cup from the start is fantastic because you don't need to repeat the races constantly to reach the hard tracks and complete them all.
