Box Synopsis

Welcome to Doom, soldier. Now shut up and start fighting because there's no time to waste! We're talking total war against the forces of evil with the only thing standing between civilization and the end of everything as we know it is you -- one angry Marine with a handgun and a bad attitude. This is the full-auto, 16-meg faithful version of the PC original. Which means all the same monsters, levels, weapons and surprises around for a screaming fast decent into danger with sudden death lurking around every corner. Strap on your ammo and prepare to spit lead. Because now's your chance to be a hero. Or die trying.

Gameplay

Doom is a first person shooter game that released in 1993 by ID Software for MS-DOS and then ported it over to several consoles including Super NES in 1995. Players assume the role of a space marine, known as Doomguy and must fight your way through hordes of invading demons from Hell.

The game is played by navigating the labyrinth style levels full of dangerous enemies waiting to tear you apart. Each level is designed differently but requires the player to survive as they navigate from a start point to the exit point collecting the required colored ID cards. Each level varies in difficulty, length and theme but ultimately play the same.

The game is broken down into 3 episodes "Knee Deep in the Dead", "The shores of Hell" and "Inferno" which contain roughly 22 levels between them with the opportunity to find bonus levels.

There are no large story elements in the game and it only delivers small text based information between episodes which loosely links it all together.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 1 point

Doom on Super Nintendo is a port of the 1993 PC version and features all 22 levels from that version which not every console version did. The very minimalist story follows the Doomguy as he battles tooth and nail to defeat the invading demons from Hell and venture there to kill the Hive Brain and save mankind.

The game is one of the few first person shooter games to make it to the console and unfortunately it is quite a fail due to the lack of story and other design elements that make it feel incomplete.

The story is very weak and is only told via small text inserts that are rewarded to you as you progress through all the levels of one episode which leaves hours between each narrative. The gameplay has intense action and great level designs that will confuse you however there just seems unfinished. If you stick to it you can easily get more than 5 hours of play which is one nice point.

Controls and Features - 1 point

Doom's port over from the PC meant they had to squeeze all the inputs and actions into the receiving control pad which in this case resulted badly and really drags this game down into the pits of scrappiness. The movement is based on pressing forward or back and rotating relies on left and right, which means you are forever stopping to rotate or you overshoot the doorways. I found that one of the most frustrating things about this game because of how it often caused me to take damage where it could of been avoided if the controls worked faster.

In game there are lots of ammo, armor and health pickups which offer you small or large boosts but these are often hard to collect due to the sloppy controls. Slowing right down when the area is clear is the best strategy as you can bump into walls and rotate in your own time safely.

This game also allows you to use the Super NES mouse for a playable controller option, however it is rather difficult to use because you need to flick the mouse forward or back to move. Once again the porting over of controls makes this game hard to play.

Design and Difficulty - 2 points

Design wise I've already discussed that the game is quite poor but I haven't even touched on the graphics yet. The game boasts about using the Super FX2 chip for awesome graphic capabilities but yet the game still looks like trash.

The floor and roof of each level is just a basic color which is so boring and then the walls and other elements are to pixelated and hard on the eyes. The walls often look messy and only break up when small details are added like light bulbs or windows.

The enemies are also poorly made as they are flat and can only be seen from the one angle. This makes enemies hard to see on certain angles and extremely pixelated at distances. So you tend to just shoot the moving blurry thing and kill them.

Overall the game is a struggle to beat on any of the difficulties but fortunately you receive unlimited lives as long as you don't turn it off. Unfortunately there are no continues or save ability's so you can only start each episode from the start once you get there meaning you must complete the game from start to finish in one sitting or don't power down your console.

Fun and Summary - 👎

Doom is very appealing when you see it for purchase but unfortunately this is not the best version of the game available. This ported is very under developed and feels like it's lacking the fluid movements needed for it to run smoothly. It's always going to be an experience trying to finish this and I'll give it credit for being a FPS game however it's just not that good to play and is barely enjoyable due to the lack of important elements and poor control scheme.
