Gameplay

Bubsy: In Claws encounters of the furred kind is a tongue a cheek platformer game starring the charismatic Bubsy the Bobcat in the first game of a growing franchise. In this game Bubsy gets the claws out and attempts to stop the Woolie Invasion and keep Earth's yarn supply for himself.

Starting in a colourful cartoon mountain town setting you must complete 16 levels of jumping, running and flying between checkpoints and collecting as much yarn and points as possible before reaching the end point. Each level has multiple paths and hidden areas for you to explore and experience.

Each level is packed full of collectibles that will help shoot your score into stardom and also help you survive the battle. Keep an eye out for crates packed full of goodies and baddies along the way.

There are 6 different world designs that not only introduce new enemy designs but also have unique track based rides and themed challenges. Prepare to battle against the Woolie bosses who wait at the end of some levels and aim to stop you from progressing on your mission.

Once you manage to beat 16 levels and stop the master Woolie you finish the game and get rewarded the ending screen.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay: 2 point

Bubsy the Bobcat makes an incredible debut appearance in this game and brings plenty of attitude to the screen. As soon as Bubsy appears on the screen you are given an over the top charismatic that is designed to deliver a simple and unbelievable story in a very fun and entertaining way.

The majority of the story is sadly told on the box and not on screen which is disappointing because there has been a lot of attention given to the character. I felt a real disconnection from the box synopsis and the game because there is no real story telling until you reach the end of the game and even then it is a bit basic.

Jumping around the levels exploring and trying not to fall into traps makes up for the lack of story elements. I really enjoyed options to explore high and low for all sorts of whacky ways to the end of the level. The levels run really well and keep you moving at a fast pace as you battle the clock.

The world designs are so colorful and fun that even if you are constantly dying you should be smiling as you soar through the sky on your next life. My favorite world is definitely the Wild West levels because it is fun riding that steam train. The gameplay is fun and will provide a few hours of enjoyment on a play though.

Controls and Features: 1 points

Even with Bubsy's larger than life attitude this game has a very simple control layout with options to do the same actions like jump by using one of two buttons, this saved me a bit in those hectic spots where my fingers missed the button with all the haste. The main buttons are broken up into jumping and gliding and then as a bonus you get to see ahead or behind you with the shoulder buttons, this is recommended for the later levels.

Unfortunately this game is purely for a single player experience and does not offer any other modes to play other than the main story. The length of the game and the lack of features makes Bubsy a bit deficient in the replay value unless you just fall in love with the character.

Design and Difficulty: 2 point

Bubsy definitely has some design issues as I've already explained but I really do appreciate the character design. The sprite not only looks fantastic as  he watches you eagerly but all of his little quirky animations never failed to make me smile. He has a little bit of cheeky attitude and if you spend the time exploring his actions you will find a abundance of on screen animations and sounds.

The sound effects are so comical and charming. Not only is there different music for all the worlds you visit but you also get to enjoy the level introduction told by Bubsy and in voice form. This is a very clever addition and I really enjoyed the use of puns and popular movies, books and more.

The level are designed to make you move fast and often make you fall victim as you fight the clock. There are plenty of ways to travel through each level which is nice but be warned each path has it's own challenge which I really enjoyed trying to overcome. The levels look great and offer plenty of on screen eye candy with their clever colors and themed baddies.

The game is rather challenging because of it's length and I fell victim to many unfortunate deaths due to my own haste. There are many challenging jumps and interesting trap designs which will keep you busy on your playthrough. As you progress the levels do begin to get harder with the introduction of their world theme and boss fight. Don't fear the bosses because they are rather easy compared to getting to them.

Fun and Summary: 👍+1

Bubsy is a really charming and fun character and does pounce into some fun action in this game. It provides a few hours of excitement and challenge and will make you laugh with some of it's pure sillyness.

Overall it is a rather good platformer to play but really lacks a driving story element which made me not as interested to finish. It could of been a little bit better if they just used some more screens to spin a yarn and tell the story throughout and not just at the conclusion.
  • Graphically appealing
  • Cartoon charm
  • Character animations
  • Whimsical fun
