Shanwow's Review
Personally I'm not a huge 7UP drinker but in the 90's many gamers where which lead to the release of this mascot inspired platformer. Cool Spot refers to the controllable character which you use to find collectable spots so you can save the other Cool Spots which are caged on your current level.
The game itself has no real storyline and is basically a 10+ level platformer on which the objective is to simply collect the dots, fight the enemies and survive the maze of a stage you are playing. The concept of the game is a little unusual to myself because mascots and branding was never huge in Australia compared to other countries markets.
Playing the game is very fun and simplistic with basic jump and shoot functions as well as an aim lock function for those tricky to hit enemies. You only have one real attack which is the ability to shoot soda fizz bubbles. You can easily spam the crap out of the button and easily demolish enemies. There are 11 levels with 5 obtainable bonus levels, which you must successfully complete on hard if you want to obtain the true joy of finishing the game. The journey from the beach into a house and back takes around an hour to complete. The game features a single player campaign and that's all which means the only replay value is in the difficulty settings.
On the default setting the game is pretty easy to play and I managed to finish it in one sitting with the use of only one continue. The level designs are fantastic and offer a few paths to the end with heaps of pickups and enemies. There are some really tricky parts to navigate with instant death if you fail. These sections however make up a very little part of the game and are require some more patience to complete.
This game has pretty good background music that creates a fun, bright and bubbly attitude as you jump through the levels. The designs of the levels themselves are somewhat impressive with a multipath options but also 3D aspects which give the illusion of passing in front and behind of objects. This is also how they hide a certain amount of collectible spots per level.
Cool Spot was a quick to finish game thanks to my platforming experiences this far. In regards to other platformers this game is average because it doesn't offer much for the player. It's fun to play YES however it isn't very long and I feel most players won't want to replay the game on hard because the ending isn't really relevant anymore. When the game first came out, beating on hard and taking a picture allowed you to submit your score into a competition. Pretty cool back then but not so much now.
