Shanwow's Review
I remember back into the early 2000's when I first played this game at a friends after school. Neither of us were very good at it, so I never got around to spending enough time to complete this game prior to the present year. I was super excited to grab my own copy of it and began to play it immediately. Excitement tingled down my spine when I blasted my first enemy away, however as I progressed I started to get frustrated more and ended up not enjoying this game as much as other cinematic platformers on the Super Nintendo.
After your recall to the planet you arrive in the mines, which are now controlled by the enemy and have enslaved your people. The story is set, it's up to you to free them and stop the evil overlord Sarlac. More story sequences are rewarded as the player progresses which helps keep it flowing.
Blackhawke is a slow, dark, creepy cinematic platformer that plays similar to 'Flashback' however it's a bit more intense and put my skills to a real test. Each level contains it's own unique danger but usually revolves around finding items and completing the sections in order so you don't have to back track and potentially die. Plenty of trial and error for me as there was not much in game instruction. The game can be finished in around 2-3 hours but with my skill level it took more like 10-15.
This title uses 100% of the controller to emulate Kyle's commando training and even has two modes, armed and holstered which vary your moves slightly. Lots of running, shooting, jumping and hanging actions. At first it took a bit to get accustomed to and only gets slightly easier as you practice.
Your shotgun is upgradable for free when you reach the end of each of the zones, the upgrade brings more aggression with higher fire power and rate of fire. There are also a handful of other items including bombs and keys which are needed to progress in certain areas. Items are usually found on dead bodies of your fallen enemies or given as a reward for talking to one of the slaves you recently saved.
There are 17 playable zones which are in one of the four main areas, the mines, the forest, the dessert and Sarlac's castle. Each zone has it's own puzzle for the player to solve before progressing. The final level is a very difficult boss battle against Sarlac, who shows why he is the boss of the army.
Getting through this game has taken me awhile and was really frustrating due to having to repeat certain zones till I achieved perfection. The levels are full of baddies and puzzles, which aren't necessarily hard by themselves. It all flows well, however I had trouble thanks to Kyle's slow and methodical movement. Each level completion rewards a password which is great for when I needed a timeout after some frustratingly long levels.
Overall Blackhawke is not a terrible game but I did find it quite frustrating and punishing compared to others. The precision needed for some situations is overwhelming due to Kyle's methodical movements. This is what led me to not enjoying this one as much as others.
