Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 3 point

Un Squadron looks and feels like a straight forward side-scrolling shooter game, however once you get started it adds more depth and story which helps it stand out of other games of the genre.

It's based on a Japanese manga called Area 88 and has characters and a storyline based on that series. It was released to EU in 1992 and still runs pretty great for it's age.

The game starts with a strong introduction that made me feel like I was immediately a part of this high flying team. The story is told in small amounts of the 10 main missions. There isn't a huge amount of dialogue but each level finishes with a fun cut scene.

The mission map allowsx you to c hoose the mission order as you progress. Each life, death, success or failure changes the icon locations on the map as the enemy advances towards your base. Each of these icons represents a level or side level which you must complete to push the enemies advance back.

Controls and Features - 3 points

Like other games of this genre, UN Squadron doesn't have a demand for high controller layout. You can however remap the 3 buttons used to whatever you like. The controls are simple and the aircraft fly well. When it comes to avoiding obstacles and on screen projectiles, the d-pad is super reliable and doesn't over or under steer.

Un Squadron really stands out in this genre for it's player loadout options. This game allows you to choose from 3 pilots, 6 aircraft and lots of weapon choices. Each item has it's own capabilities and price, which allows the player to fine tune their loadout for success.

Once again the game features and evolving battle map which allows you to either go straight into a main mission or do a repeatable mission for some extra cash to upgrade your equipment. Cash is the main objective and is gained by destroying enemies and completing missions.

Design and Difficulty - 2 points

This game does provide a really good challenge and I spent several hours playing it till I luckily completed it. I only finished the game on easy however, the level of difficulty was still high enough for it to be challenging and not just a typical walk in the park shooter.

The game designers really did a fantastic job in making this unique side scolling shooter. A lot of effort went into all the elements behind the scenes and that helps deliver a fast paced adrenaline fueled shooter.

The music for this game is intense and driving. It gave me the want for success and kept me there from start to finish. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard new music with each new level I played.

The graphics however are a bit rough and old looking which is a little unpleasant. However due to all the onscreen mayhem, it uses less memory which allows more enemies and projectiles on screen, adding to the chaos.

Fun and Summary - 👍+1

As soon as I switched this game on I was ready to throw down and blast away all the enemies as I flew towards the danger zone. The game delivers intense, exciting and fun experience all the way even with my large amount of deaths.

I really enjoyed this title for it's playstyle and how I could pick and choose everything in my loadout to help me succeed. Earning and learning the weapons was a real game changer.

I played this game on easy and after learning my capabilities I was able to defeat mission 10 and stop the terrorist group Project 4.

UN squadron hits hard and really breaks away from the genre with it's game play changing features and the level of customization. I highly recommend it for al SNES collectors.
