Story and Gameplay - 2
Judge Dredd is an action platformer game based on the live action film released in 1995 of the same name. The story is set in the 22nd century after civilization has broken down and criminals run loose in the massive urban zones now called Mega-Cities. Judge Dredd is a law maker trying to clean up the streets before being framed for a crime against the law system. The player then must fight through levels to prove their innocence and find who is actually behind this heinous crime.
The story is present from the start to the end of this game which felt great because I really enjoyed the plot of the film. A mixture of techniques are used for the narrative but mainly uses static screens with scrolling dialogue which is ok but doesn't feel futuristic like the game itself.
The gameplay style is an action platformer that gives the player a main and secondary objective for each level. It's fast paced action and multitude of weaponry choices makes this a real run and gun game. As a player you can shoot in multiple directions and you also can perform actions that interact with the environment such as hanging from ladders and ceilings.
There are 12 levels with smaller sub levels included which makes this game rather big and took me about 2 hours to finish from start to finish. Some of the missions and objectives seem a bit pointless and tedious which overall made it feel more punishing than rewarding.

Controls and Features - 2 point
Judge Dredd has a very good controller layout and uses every button plus combinations to do cool secondary moves. Due to it's 100% use the controls can feel a little much when you start to play for the first time. However with that said, I found myself using two buttons more often that the rest as I busted skulls and detained those criminals.
If you like to shoot the place up, you can in this game as you have unlimited basic ammo and can aim your weapons pretty much at any angle if you hold the direction. There is no aim lock which means sometimes I found myself walking back and forward on a higher platform shooting through it at the perps below. It's tricky sometimes to maintain a shot pattern but that's when you can either melee strike or change your ammo type to suit the situation.
This game features a full Law Maker arsenal of ammo choices as per the standard Judge weapon from the film and comics. As a player you can find the other ammo types in the levels which are commonly dropped from crates or enemies when killed or arrested. It's a good idea to experiment with each weapon as you get them because with the limited ammo you find, it's a great idea to know which weapon to use and when.
As the Judge, you can also pacify perps that threaten you by shooting or beating them into submission. Some enemies will drop to their knees when they have had enough which allows you to arrest them. If you don't like the person, you can always execute them however arresting them usually has a better reward in the form of points or ammo. Scoring points in this game is highly important because if you fail to locate the bonus lives hidden through the levels, you can only get extra lives from points. So search high, search low and look for anything that can score.

Design and Difficulty - 1 points
Judge Dredd was designed and released alongside the 1995 film and features elements that were created for the cinema audience. The game graphics are pretty appealing and I enjoyed the look of both character and environment sprites. Seven of the 12 level's were created by digitizing sets from the movie and the other 5 are based on the comic.
Graphically I feel that Judge Dredd has nailed it apart from the very large overlay at the top of the screen which is a bit distracting sometimes. It does however hold key information like points, lives, ammo count and your objective but I would of preferred it a little smaller so I could see more of the sky and taller environment elements without moving into positions.
This game has a pretty good synthesizer cyber punkish soundtrack which creates a tense action feel, great for pummeling perps with flying fists, headbutts and explosives. The sound effects are pretty decent and match up well with the rest of the feel of the game.
It's a rather difficult game to finish and a bit of practice and knowledge is required to do so. There aren't many puzzles or tricky jumps, just badass enemies that damage you real good if you get in their way. The levels get harder as you progress due to added environmental threats, bigger enemies and boss battles. Unfortunately the password system is a bit flawed because you only get passwords at certain points of the game which means you may have to repeat several levels to return to your exact point of death. I found this a bit frustrating because sometimes that meant redoing the last 45 mins of gameplay and covering three levels instead of just starting again at the current level. The boss fights are also rather difficult which can also shut down any good run your on and punish you until you are good enough to beat them.

Fun and Summary - 👍+1
Judge Dredd is a decent movie based game for Super Nintendo that can provide a lot of enjoyment if you like the Sci-Fi genre. It does have a bit of a learning curve at first due to it's controller layout however once you get going the action is rather addictive until you get whooped a few to many times.
I found this game to be really fun and exciting thanks to the ammo choices, music and multiple ways to deal with criminals. If you are a fan of the 1995 film like I am, you may like this game a bit, however it is rather difficult which means if you know the story line you can either go for gold and complete it or just drop out early when the fun stops.
