Gameplay

Smash Tennis is a fantasy tennis game and is a sequel to 'Family Tennis' on NES. The game features regular tennis rules and elements but is not based on any real players or locations.

There are a two main modes to play and these have options for single and multi-player options. The first being exhibition and then secondly a tournament.

Exhibition mode is a just for fun match but it allows you to adjust the settings for a more customized match. You can choose a location, the amount of sets and of course your player. You can play this mode by yourself, with friends or as a spectator if you wish.

Tournament mode is a round robin style championship that allows the player to face off against a set of opponents that vary in difficulty and play style. There are less set up options in this mode and only allows you to choose your player.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 1 points

Smash Tennis is a fantasy tennis game that was made as a sequel to the NES game 'Family Tennis'. This 1993 release is purely a sports game and does not have any built in story elements and sadly, not even an introduction video.

The gameplay for this game is fast and hard. It's a traditional tennis game so all the regular rules apply but prepare to be tested as the ball starts flying at high speeds. The game doesn't offer much to make it different from other tennis games but I did enjoy the venues and environments.

Smash Tennis scores low in this category due to the lack of things to do as a single player. You only have exhibition matches and a tournament that doesn't last very long due to not being able to adjust the settings. It's more of a game for competitive friend and family play.

Controls and Features - 1 point

This game is super easy to pickup and play due to it's simplistic controller layout that only uses the d-pad and the colored buttons. The player has several options to hit or return the ball and the button choice dictates that. At first I did have a few faults because I was serving it too hard but after experimenting, I managed to get a few quick serve scores.

Moving on screen and playing a game was a bit hard at first for me. The ball speed is quite fast at first but if you watch the shadow of the ball it can help with your timing. The great thing about this game is that you can also dive at the ball by simply pressing the button at the right time, however it is just as easy to miss if mistimed.

This fantasy tennis game doesn't offer many modes but it does allow the player to customize the match to their liking whenever you play exhibition. There are 20 playable characters that all bring their own on court appearance, as well as several court types and locations. It says on the box realistic, but to be honest playing on a sandy beach isn't realistic. The venues are definitely fun and have little hidden things if you watch the area around the match. A good example of this is the Shrine Venue which has a Koi pond that you can try and put a ball into.

Unfortunately there isn't a large enough amount of game modes or options to make this game lack replay value as a single player. The multi-player options are great and not only let you face of against AI or human players but also allows you to spectate if you want to learn how to play.

Design and Difficulty - 2 points

There are no difficulty options for this game and I'm not sure if some players are easier than others, but I can say that tournament mode is way harder than exhibition. The tournament mode players increase their on court skill putting pressure on you as you advance up the ladder. The final match was way harder then the earlier ones that I won without losing a game.

The overall design for this game feels like it was focused on playing as a family and less by yourself. There isn't much to do except practice and try to win a tournament if you are alone. That's not all bad because practice makes perfect but I didn't feel like playing this game for too long in one session.

The animations and graphics for this game are pretty good for it's age. There is a lot of camera movement which does make it blur a little sometimes but overall the sprites look tight and the environments are colorful and somewhat interactive.

Sound wise this game is pretty simple and doesn't have any real music other than between matches. The main sounds are environmental and of  course the sounds the players make. The environment sometimes has an overpowering sound that can be distracting. A good example is the beach, which has a constant wave crashing sound.

Fun and Summary - 👍 + 1

Smash Tennis is a really fun game to play and I had a great time learning and getting better over the couple of hours I spent playing. It's a fast paced game that has a good challenge for anyone willing to play this sports game.

It's a much better game with friends so keep that in mind because as a single player it does lack things to do due to no story or long tournament modes. It's a great fantasy game for competitive play between family and friends.
