Gameplay

Harvest Moon is a farming simulation game that allows the player to assume the control of a young farmer who is in charge of running the family farm for several seasons after inheriting it from his Grandfather. This is no small job as it is now up to you to undergo choirs at your farm while traveling to town with limited time every day. During your time you will need to eventually learn how to plough and sow fields of crops that will produce income so you can expand your knowledge and wealth with live stock. Work hard and you will get great results but keep in mind to remain social, as the characters you meet on your journey can also become an important part of your daily routine. It is your farm  and your life, so play it the way you want to.

Harvest Moon is a story driven game that plays over a series of days that countdown till the end of the seasons and the return of your parents. This marks the end of the game and you receive a score based on how you played the game. This game not only has a story but also has lots of tiny little activities that act as choirs for the player to do on a day by day cycle. There are three main areas and these areas are for separate activities or serve for a certain purpose.

While you are on your farm, you are home and this is where the majority of the hard work will be done. When you begin the game, you own a small shack and have a very over grown plot of farm land that needs some tending too. Your farm life  is about getting work done so you can create an income by putting produce into the shipping box whenever you possibly can. This is because at the end of each day, the items in the box are shipped and you receive money based on what was inside the box. With that being said your farm can eventually earn money from crops, eggs, dairy and live stock. At the beginning you can only start with crops, so the first steps to farming are clearing a crop area and using your tools to prepare and then sow your first crops. Each action will reduce your overall energy supply and after awhile you will fall to the ground and not be able to conduct any more work. Once this happens you can either head to bed to sleep and end the day or visit the hot spa to regain some energy.

The second area is the town area and  this is a social hub where you visit to meet people, buy supplies, buy livestock, relax with a beverage and even look for a partner. The shops are only open during the day so shopping is essentially during those hours. Certain events will also happen in town on noted calendar days which you can also partake in. These usually influence the girl your trying to romance. Livestock and other produce can also be purchased as it becomes available during your time as a farmer.

The last playable area is the mountain and this area is a side area of opportunity to make money and get some energy back when needed. Throughout the year some items such as fruits and mushrooms will be available for the player to find and place in the delivery box at the farm for money. You can also borrow a fisherman's fishing rod and try to catch a fish. If you're luck, placing it in the delivery box is also worth some money. There is a cave on this mountain which is worth exploring on certain days of the week because some people visit it regularly. Finally, the hot springs on the mountain will recover some of your health when you enter and exit the hot spring. If you jump in and out about 10 times you get 100% energy and can continue working after your initial collapse due to low energy. This can be repeated multiple times if you wish to extend one day for as long as you desire.

With those areas explained briefly the rest of the game is about exploring and figuring out what works for you as a player. The game is a choose your own adventure and allows you to do anything you want with your limited days on the farm. Work hard and grow a profitable farm or maybe marry and have a family instead. It's your decision because it's your farm.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 3 points

Harvest Moon is a farming simulator that features a repetitive play style that has so much charm and fun that it kept me playing straight for hours at a time. The game has so many little activities that are first choirs but soon become a fun way to past your time as you race against time to become a success.

The aim of the game is to play anyway you want and run a farm for several seasons with no parents around. With little background knowledge or training, you find yourself with a shack surrounded by farmable land that nature has been slowly taking back. So if you choose you can work hard and clear the farm or you can head to town and be more of a party animal and spend your money of other pleasures. The choice is yours and that's what makes this game so great.

The story is there at the beginning of the game and it continues to trickle out over time as you cross of the calendar days. There is a the main story of running the farm but there are also many other dialogue options that can alter your future. The story is always growing in the background of this game because everything you do influences it and your ending  score.

The game play is quite repetitive but what do you expect from a farm simulator. The great thing is that even though you may find yourself spending hours clearing your farm, you can  take a break and go to town or whatever really and refresh your mind, then return to work. I found that you can clear the whole farm on the first night by returning to the hot springs as many times as needed to refresh. This took hours of real time but once done you only have to maintain which is great because you can just grow lots of grass quickly for cows and chickens. The game length is as long as you want it to be essentially because you choose when to end the days but let's just say it's very long.

Controls and Features - 3 point

Harvest Moon is a hard work simulator and has a rather complexed controller layout that becomes systematic after you begin to play. It's focused on the tools you carry and interacting with the environment as that is what farming is. You can carry two tools as a time which means sometimes you might forget to swap  tools and accidently waste some energy but the games controls are friendly and explained in game if requested.

The game is loaded with things to do that all effect your end score but those things are necessarily clear and that's the fun of the game. The farm features lots of activities alone which will sap up your time as you try to start making profits. However if you talk to people in town you will notice they change dialogue, which is a social aspect to the game. This social aspect was unknown when I first played it and even though I got rich and had lots of nice things, I didn't get married or have a family which was another way to conclude your story. The game has flexible dynamics that just keep it charming and addictive.

The season changes also help keep the game interesting as you plough into it. When a season changes the gameplay is altered to reflect the real life issues a farmer would have during those times. That means new types of crops will have to be grown as well treated differently due to the climate. It's great to have these changes because it keeps the game growing.

Design and Difficulty - 3 points

Harvest Moon has a design that sounds so silly and shouldn't work but it does and it is amazing. The fact that someone could design a farming simulator that people would  actually want to play for hours is beyond me. The concept is unusual and I believe if it wasn't developed as well as it was, it would not of been as much of a success.

The gameplay design is simple and based on doing all your choirs before bedtime and learning todo it effectively so you can squeeze more into your day. It's super repetitive but some how it's charming so that the choirs become fun to do and somewhat a challenge against the clock because overall the game is one giant countdown.

With a lot of time spent on screen I really came to enjoy the graphics and how the game had shading that was based on the time of the day and weather. The town is a bit square and basic but it serves its purposes and acts as a real township should. The town folk sprites are clean and animated well which is nice because they are apart of the whole story.

I don't think there is a way to fail at this game or get a game over screen, however there are ways to negatively effect yourself and your end score. The game has places for you to learn how to increase your chances of success and these little tutorials are quite helpful at first. Look for journals and books in your home and around others homes as they sometimes also have hints and helpful notes. The game is about exploring and having fun but learning to appreciate time as well. Success is up to you so play it how you want too.

Fun and Summary - 👍 + 1

This game is so fun and addictive that I have to tell myself to put it down and walk away because I know I'm not doing my real life choirs. The game is also so large that, time is needed to finish it, what a dilemma.

Harvest Moon is a game that sounds like it shouldn't work but it just does and I don't know how they made a farming simulator so fun. Is it the fact that I could challenge my OCD to clear the farm within a time limit or is was it that I enjoyed brushing my cows every morning so they produced the best milk? I'm not ultimately sure on what makes this game so unique and charming but I am sure that I highly recommended you try and find a copy for yourself because peace and joy awaits.
