Hal's Hole in One Golf is a fantasy golf game developed and published by Hal Laboratories. This golf game features multiple modes of play for a single and multi player audience.

There are 6 modes to enjoy which are played all on the same course, however the order of play is different based on the selected mode. There are 18 holes of varying difficulty and design with built in terrain, wind and normal golfing obstacles. You can enjoy a round of golf by yourself, against the CPU or with up to 3 other friends in a 4 person game. There are also different difficulty settings for someone seeking more of a challenge.

The objective of the game is to hit your ball from the Tee off and place it in the cup on the green at the end of the whole. The amount of swings taken are added to your points and the aim is to be the player with the lowest score at the end of the game.

The gameplay is as simple as picking the right club and pressing the action button at the right time. However to win the tournament, skill and knowledge are required so prepare for a fun challenge.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 1 points

Hal's Hole In One Golf was released in the PAL region in 1992 and was developed and published by Halken (Hal Laboratory). This game was spawned off the success of the Japanese release game known as Jumbo Ozaki's No Hole In One.

Hal Lab delivers a classic birds eye view fantasy golf game with 18 challenging holes set set on a fantasy course. There are no story elements to the game but there is a tournament for players still seeking to complete a challenge.

The gameplay is very similar to other golf games and relies on the playing picking the right club and pressing the button at the correct time for maximum distance. The game can be played in a variety of ways with up to 4 players which is fantastic since it lacks a variety of courses.

Controls and Features - 2 point

Hal's Hole In One Golf offers a simple way to play and really only relies on two buttons to play and then a little knowledge of the golf. The controller input is very simple and also allows multiple players to use on control making this a sharable and competitive experience if you like.

There are a 6 different game modes which each offer a varying playstyle on the same course. You have classic modes like Tournament and stroke play but if you want something with a bit more, you can face of against the AI Hal who will put you skills to the ultimate test.

Design and Difficulty - 2 points

Hal's Hole In One Golf has an overall fun and edgy design for a golf game of this age. It does use creative camera angles for those great action highlights but it lacks some other key elements which could of made the game a little better.

One major thing is that there is no real music soundtrack while playing in game. Golf may be a game of skill and focus but when you are passing a control around between 4 players, no music really makes it feel a bit dragged out. This is worse when you play by yourself because there is no in game banter or anything.

The game's difficulty is based on which setting you choose, however I did find with my little golf experience that the first setting was challenging enough. The top golfers on the scoreboard seemed to come under par on most holes which means a bit of practice may be required if you don't have a golf background.

Fun and Summary - 👍 + 1

Hal's Hole In One Golf is a pretty decent golf game to play. The colors, sounds and overall on screen feel are very appealing. Overall the game provides a decent session of play for a keen single player or with friends. The great thing is that you only require one control to play all modes which means it's cheap to buy and play if you have bunch of people who like golf.

As a single player I found there was some appeal to practicing and getting better but consistency was key as the AI players seemed to put out a similar game result most times. There is some replay value but this one is best played against friends.

RetroRating: 6 out of 10
