Gameplay

F1 World Championship Edition is a fully licensed F1 game that features 12 real teams and 16 tracks designed to replicate the real life versions. This is a F1 racing game that allows the player to select from there favorite team and then race on real circuits in the mode that they decide.

Championship mode allows you to choose how many races to include and has 16 to select from based on real life tracks. Once you choose your team you head into the racing championship where you are challenged to qualify in a two lap trial before the real race that features 11 other racers. You can set the amount of laps in the options but if you leave it on default and play all 16 races you get about 2-3 hours of solid racing action.

Practice mode allows you to play any track for practice.

Knockout mode is a knockout league championship. There are no qualifier races and you get points for winning and if you lose to many times you are eliminated from the league. You cannot set the track order in this mode but you can adjust the laps using the options.

All of these modes can be played in single-player and multi-player options. These options are player vs SNES and player vs player.

Story and Gameplay - 1 point

F1 World Championship Edition is a fully licensed F1 racing game that features real teams and tracks. This game is all about the racing and has no story what so ever but that's pretty normal for racing games based on real sports.

Gameplay comes in a variety of modes that are all fast and furious as you battle your way through tracks based on real life circuits and against AI that feels like they drive just as good as the real drivers of this time. The gameplay is simple but it keeps you on the edge of your seat as you anticipate each coming corner and how much brake needs to be applied if you don't want to end up off the track and losing your position.

The Championship mode is great because it allows you to adjust the length of it by changing how many tracks you want to race over the course of it all. You can race any where between 1 - 16 races that have there own background design and themes. I choose to play the default settings for this which was all tracks at 5 laps each and that took me about 2 and a half hours. You can take a break from the ear breaking engine sounds with the passwords if you record them between races.

This game does have a good level of competition and allows you to challenge yourself to a rather real racing game, however it just doesn't have much else going on. So if you don't like racing games it really has no appeal what so ever and that's why it's not that expensive if you can find it.

Controls and Features - 2 point

Don't worry an F1 car isn't hard to drive thanks to a controller layout that lets you choose from two accelerate and brake buttons just incase you get flustered. Other than that it's just steering unless your brave enough to drive manual because that requires the L and R buttons for gear shifts. Anyone can jump on and have a crack at this game which is great because it's plays better with a friend.

This game is loaded with awesome features like real teams and names you might recognize if F1 is something you followed through the 90's. I can say M. Schumacher is in there and is my favorite because he is the only one I know. You could always base you choice on the colored vehicles because there are 12 different looks.

The amount of tracks in this game is a great amount coming in at 16. They are based on real life tracks that existed at the time which is pretty cool, especially if that track has been changed since then.

Really enjoyed the fact that among the different modes they all came with a two player option if a 2nd controller was detected. You can jump in against a friend in all of the modes which is means you can create your own championships. If a friend isn't available and you want to just face off against one person you can also challenge your SNES which places an AI opponent of the track for you to challenge.

Design and Difficulty - 2 points

F1 World Championship Edition has been a pretty interesting game to play and look into because I'm not a huge fan of racing but I really enjoyed playing this due to it's simplistic design and challenge level. This game may not look the best but it plays well and has some great design ideas along with one that was definitely not.

First up graphically this game does feel like it's a bit old for the Super NES console and that's because after some research I discovered that this game was made for other platforms before being bought and remarketed as an F1 product. So the graphics are bright and colorful but do lack shadows and depth. The vehicles look very blocky and don't seem to have much animation to them at all, not even the wheels spin.

The introduction music is quite catchy and you will probably bump your head along to a simple beat but prepare for that feeling to be torn away as there is no music in game. It's unfortunately replace by horrible sounding engine sounds that are so loud that my wife stormed in and told me to turn it down by using some choice words. You can easily play this game on mute and not miss anything.

This game contains real drivers names and teams so prepare to get your butt whooped by them if you make a simple mistake on race day. The other races make the game quite difficult because they seem to nail the perfect race lines every time and will happily bump you out of the way with no consequence to them. The starting difficulty on championship mode provided a real challenge to me and I barely one any of the 16 races but thanks to the winner varying every race, I managed to secure enough points to win a 3rd place position.

Fun and Summary - 👍 + 1

F1 World Championship Edition is a pretty fun game whether your a real F1 racing fan or not. The amount of fun however will be limited to your following based on the fact that it is quite hard which ended up becoming really annoying and made me want to quit many times.

The game play is really fun and fast and because of those nasty engine sounds, it did make me feel like I was actually racing when I had my headphones in. There is excitement, there is frustration and there of course is challenge. It's a racing game so it usually holds a smaller value so why not give it a shot if you see it around. You might enjoy the realistic feel to racing and losing more than you win.
