Gameplay

Donkey Kong Country is a 1994 platform game developed by Rare and Published by Nintendo. It is a reboot of Nintendo's Donkey Kong franchise and follows the gorilla Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy Kong as they set out to recover their stolen banana horde from the reptilian gang known as the Kremlins.

This game is a side scrolling platform game in which the player must complete 40 levels which are spread over several visit able worlds that follow an island theme. In single player mode you control Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong and can switch between them when needed. Both Kongs can run, jump, pick up barrels and interact with the environment to succeed in completing the level.

The player navigates between outer world and inner world screens and must complete each level in order to replace the Kremlin flag with the DK flag to show the level has been completed. The outer world also allows the player to visit and interact with the Kong family members who are around the map and willing to help you on your quest.

The majority of this game is played as a linear platformer but does have various enemies, obstacles, mounts and ride on vehicles in some levels. Enemies are defeated by jumping on them or hitting them with a barrel or animal mount. If they hit you, your current Kong will either run of screen or get knocked out which will cause you to begin the level again.

Finally there are many collectables for you to find on your journey and these include bananas, balloons, golden animal tokens and golden letters that spell K-O-N-G. To get extra lives you can collect the balloons which give lives based on their color or you can collect all the letters in K-O-N-G or collect 100 bananas for 1 life.

Multi-player mode plays exactly like the single-player mode except the players switch on screen control based on the option chosen at the beginning of the game. You can choose to either work together as a team or against eachother.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 2 points

Donkey Kong Country is a 3-D Gorilla Thriller and the first of the reboots to hit the Super Nintendo console. This game revitalized the Donkey Kong franchise by changing it into a 3D platformer for one or two players.

The story is told as you progress and bash the banana stealing baddies known as the Kremlins. Story elements are seen throughout the game and are displayed by using text and animated screens which are fun, cheeky and charasmatic.

Being the first of it's kind, this Donkey Kong Country game is the most basic for the console. It primarily plays as a linear side scrolling platformer full of danger and collectibles. The game play remains relatively the same throughout but there are times when you can access animal mounts and rail based vehicles as well which keep the game interesting and fun.

There are 40 awesome levels scattered between all the over world locations which are themed based on it's position on the island. The world's have great unique themes and bring a fresh appearance as a reward for progressing through and beating the boss of each world.

Controls and Features - 1 point

Donkey Kong Country is a great game for everyone to enjoy because of it's really simple control layout that turns into explosive action on screen. The controller layout utilizes about 60% which is more than enough to keep you busy as you bash the baddies and get that banana goodness.

Being that it is the first of the series there aren't a lot of additional features in game but it does have the multi-player options for when you want to bring a friend in on the action. There are also co-op and versus modes which slightly change the way you play but ultimately turn the single-player campaign into something shareable.

The game has 3 save files which is fantastic because you can start one of each of the modes if you wish too. The save game option is a little different with this title because you are required to visit on of the Kong family members along the way. These stop overs are spread out between levels which means you may not be able to save it after every level completed.

Design and Difficulty - 3 points

This Donkey Kong Country is rated for everyone and does have a reasonably friendly difficulty level along side an adventure full of color, music and craziness. The overall map design is fantastic and breaks up the game by allowing you to travel back and forward between levels. This is very useful for farming lives when needed.

Each level has fantastic music that is composed with amazing ability and really sets the mood for this fun and creative adventure. There are loads of music options so prepare to spoil your ears with interesting tunes that may get stuck in your head.

The level designs are also great because of there individual theming and design. Each level is based around the outer world zone it is with in and usually brings a unique enemy or twist. Most of the levels are linear but there are some really enjoyable and challenging moments with the additional dangers like a giant hamster wheel that chases you.

Lives are quite easy to farm by using Funky Kong's travel service and returning to levels you have beaten previously. The first level is perfect for this as you can easily get 2-5 lives in one run through which only takes a few minutes. Farming lives is a great idea when you begin a long session because they only exist for the current session.

Each world also has a giant banana reward for you when you defeat the boss that has taken it hostage. These boss battles are fun because you usually fight a larger than life enemy from the world you are in. They aren't very difficult to defeat but do require a little focus when learning their patterns.

Fun and Summary - 👍 +1 point

Donkey Kong County is so good, it's one of those classic games that helped cement Nintendo as the game industry changed through time. This game is the first of an amazing series and allowed it to remain straight forward and more linear where the later games have more depth when it comes to things to do.

It may be a platformer but this Rare creation definitely hangs higher than some because of it's fun and colorful family style artwork and music. This is one of those games that nearly everyone has played if they own a Super NES and that is because it's good!
