Box Synopsis

O.K Kid, wipe that drool off your chin and listen up. If you really want to learn something about this game. Sure, it's got newfangled computer graphics and what Diddy calls stereo sound that "rocks heavily with little resistance!" BUT, the game play? Well, they finally added some proper challenge to the game-a snap for me of course. AND THE STORY? You sure ask alot of questions, kid! Kaptain. K. Rool and his cruelest cut-throat Kremlins have kidnapped that flea-bitten Donkey Kong. I figured I'd rescue him when the little pip squeak DIDDY pops up along with his girlfriend, and they head off fixin' to prove themselves heroes or something. Come to think of it, I haven't laid eyes on those two for quite awhile. I just may have to help them out after all!

Gameplay

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong quest is a 2-D side scrolling platformer that is a direct sequel to Donkey Kong Country. In this game the player takes control of either Diddy Kong or his girlfriend Dixie Kong and must complete 52 levels that are spread over eight worlds. The game features a wide variety of enemies, which include land based reptilian Kremlins, rats, bees, vultures as well as underwater baddies in the swimming levels.

Diddy and Dixie both have unique attributes; Diddy is faster and more agile while Dixie has a higher jump and can spin her hair to fall slowly through the air. This game introduced the ability to pick up and throw your partner which allows you to access certain areas and defeat certain enemies. The playable animal mounts return in this game and include Squitter the Spider, Rambi the Rhino, Rattly the rattlesnake, Enguarde the Swordfish and Squawks the Parrot.

This game also uses environmental effects throughout some levels which can be in the form of fog, rain, wind and thunderstorms. Some levels offer different play mechanics as they introduce new settings or sections such as underwater levels, riding a minecart, sticky honey spots and swinging vines. The classic DK barrels return with the same collectables as the previous title and come in the forms of bananas, balloons, golden letters and DK coins.

In this game when you complete a level the icon changes depending on how many bonus levels you found and whether you collected everything from that level. The player can achieve a total of 102% which can be achieved by defeating all the levels and bosses, collecting all the bonus challenges and DK coins as well as visiting your family members on your adventure.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay - 2 points

Donkey Kong 2: Diddy's Kong Quest is the sequel to Donkey Kong Country and changes the playable character to my favorite Kong duo Diddy and Dixie. The story begins as you discover a note aboard a ship informing you that Kaptain K. Rool has kidnapped Donkey Kong and you must pay the ransom to save him which is the banana horde he tried to steal in the first game.

The story telling is simple and not really detailed however it is told by progressing through the worlds and speaking to your family Kong. There isn't a highly detailed amount of story telling contained within but there is enough present to hold the story together along the way.

This game has more collectables than the first which is awesome because now you can replay levels to aim to achieve 100% collection per level and 102% if you really want to get everything in game. There are 52 awesome levels which are themed well and will see you adventuring across ship decks, amusement rides, wasp hives and more.

Controls and Features - 2 points

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest has a similar control layout to the previous title but does add a few advanced moves in for extra kicks. There now is the ability to put your partner on your back and toss them around which is great for finding secret areas because you can kind off teleport to where your partner landed. The controls still stick to a very simple and friendly layout which is perfect for anyone who has played either the previous or later game.

Once again this Donkey Kong game allows you to either team up or face off against a second player with it's multiplayer modes. These modes don't change the levels or game design but allow you to play it in a different way which alternates based on your choice when you start a new file.

Save files are available which is fantastic because this game can consume many hours on your way to completing it and even more hours if you want to get 102%. The save game option is given once the player reaches the world's Kong College and pays the cost using the coins found in the levels. There are a few more Kong family members to meet and greet along the way and they all offer something for you if you pop in and visit them.

Design and Difficulty - 3 points

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest has the best overall design out of the three DK games for the Super NES. It takes what was successful from the first entry and makes it better by adding more moves, collectables, enemies and level designs.

The out world design is fantastic and has a dark and gloomy feel which is a bit different from the first game because you have left your home island. Each world holds a handful of themed levels which are based on the worlds overall design. The game play mechanics change as you progress through the game and unlock new areas to visit as well as new enemies.

The composer from the previous game David Wise returns and brings more great soundtracks to enjoy. They are a little bit darker sounding but rock heavily with a little resistance like Diddy Kong says. If you enjoy a little bit of rock and roll the sound track for this game is perfect for you as it has some heavy notes and sounds. I also really enjoyed Dixie's little riff when you complete as level using her.

This entry to the DK series is a little harder than the first which is great because I found that one rather easy. Each level holds it's own dangers and will test you on your basic movement skills and timing. It will require a little more practice than the first due to the introduction of new moves and skills.

Once again the boss fights return but this time with vengeance. They are all a little more difficult this time round because they have more moves and patterns in their programming. They fights are a lot more enjoyable than the first because of the extra challenge present.

Fun and Summary - 👍 +1

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong quest is my favorite of the DK series on Super Nintendo because it is paired back a little compared to the third but adds the right amount of extras on the first. The game has many hours within the main story as well as extra outings if you wish to visit the hidden world.

This Donkey Kong game rocks the hardest and has the best overall game and level design. I really enjoyed how it keeps to it's platformer roots but has been adjusted to add more replay value and fun for the player. In my opinion it has the best Donkey Kong design without over doing it and making it feel to large to complete or having to many collectables and side activities.
