Box Synopsis

AS PREDICTED, THE FUTURE IS GOING TO BLOW!

2065  AD. The nations of Earth have once again split into two major powers. The lines dividing these new arch enemies reaches as far as the lunar frontier, where Axis forces have constructed a moon base capable of launching monolithic intergalactic battle cruisers.

To thwart this threat, a covert strike team consisting of the marines' elite Cybernator force has been mobilized. The Cybernator is a giant mechanical warrior controlled by a marine who sits in the command cockpit within the units chromium cranium. Nuclear Fission Thrusters allow the Cybernator to wreak havoc while soaring from ground zero to the infinity of space.

Gameplay

Cybernator is a 2D mech platformer game that allows the player to pilot an assault suit armed with land and air capabilities. The objective of the game is to survive several missions and powerup your weaponry so you can destroy Bildvorg. The gameplay changes slightly throughout and has sections that are side scrolling, vertical scrolling and zero gravity zones.

As you play you are given the opportunity to upgrade your weaponry as you choose by finding "P chips" from defeated foes. When you collect one, your equipped weapon will lower it's total needed count and if that hits zero it is powered up a level and it changes the way it operates. Other chips that you can find are "H chips" which recover your health and "W chips" which add a new weapon to your assault suit.

There are 7 exciting levels to playthrough. Each level is quite unique in design and has a clear objective which is usually completed once you beat the boss or destroy certain installations. The game has about 1-2 hours of playtime if you have a successful run.

The game also has two ending which are based on how successful you are on your mission. Both endings require a separate playthrough to achieve and that adds some replay value.

Controls

Cybernator uses almost 100% of the controller and can be quite difficult at first because of the amount of input required to pilot the assault suit.

L - hold: locks your turret so you keep firing in that direction. Useful for walking back and forward and not turning your back

R - Shield: holding or tapping this button activates your shield. Blocks most projectiles and is very helpful

Y - Shoot: press or hold this to fire. When firing hold up and down to adjust your shooting angle

X - Weapon swap: press this to swap between your weapons

B - Jump: press to jump. Press and hold to use your jetpack

A - Dash: press to dash. Press and hold while holding forward or back to dash in that direction

Start - Pause: press to pause the game and display map on screen

Select - N/A

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay: 2 points

Cybernator has a great story that is as you fight through the dangers of the enemy forces and try to survive this war that could destroy mankind. The story is introduced with an explosive introduction video showing how far this battle has reached. From there the plot is laid out to the player at the beginning of each level, this also covers the main objective of that current mission.

Once your on the ground in the suit, your character comes to life at certain points of the level which pauses the game and helps you take a breath and catch up with the story. There are several characters from both side that have some good dialogue and it helps keep you focused on the ultimate goal of survival.

The game has multiple large scale levels that are stick to the platform genre but  differ the play slightly by the creative use of side scrolling features and anti gravity zones. The breakup in gameplay is always welcome because it can be quite challenging to make it through the handful of large scale levels available.

Controls and Features: 2 points

Cybernator is quite a handful to control when you first get into the game because it requires you to use the whole controller if you want to live. The controls are simple button presses mostly but there are some advanced moves to learn which do require holding or using combinations. The layout can be remapped to suit which is a nice friendly addition.

The movement on screen is a little slow and does require a little of forward planning but that is sort of the point when it comes to piloting a huge mech. The gun aim is probably the biggest issue with speed because the trajectory of each shot is dependent on which angle your gun barrel is set. You adjust the angle up or down one movement at a time by pressing the up and down directions and there is a little practice needed to perfect that.

One thing that helps this game standout is the weapon power up feature. This allows you to choose which weapon you wish to powerup when you collect the limited P chip. Once you power a weapon up with enough chips it changes the way it acts and can help you with tougher fights. I really enjoyed this feature because it adds a strategic approach to the game and helps keep the retries fresh with ideas.

Cybernator packs a action packed campaign but doesn't unfortunately offer much else in the way of modes.

Design and Difficulty: 2 points

This game is a quite pleasant to look at with really nicely detail sprites. There are some reskins but most enemies and designs are unique. The game runs rather smoothly continuously but suffers slow down with some big explosions.

The game also has a great action packed soundtrack that changes with the on screen activity. The basic sounds of the game are really good and that is backed by an intense soundtrack.

This is quite a difficult game and I had a bit of a struggle getting to the end. There isn't an option to change difficulty or edit your continue count so you limited there.

I would say a difficulty rating of 6/10 and that is based mainly on learning the controls and how to beat the bosses. Most battles are easily won by shooting and using your shield.

Fun and Summary: 👍 +1 point

This game is very fun and that is thanks to an overall great design. It's not to easy which means the challenge is there and that makes getting further with every continue rewarding.

I really enjoyed learning this game and battling my way through the multi platform levels and boss fights.

Issues:
  • The difficulty is set
  • The advanced control are hard to learn
  • Short game length
  • Very slow aiming

RetroRating: 7/10
