Gameplay

Batman Forever is a beat 'em up using the Mortal Kombat 2 engine which makes the gameplay slower and methodical. As a player you are given a choice of character and access to over 125 moves and an arsenal of gadgetry.

  • Main mode

The main story mode allows you to choose from Batman or Robin and plays over 8 maze like levels full of baddies, obstacles, destructible, secrets and puzzles. Each level is designed differently and will require you to engage in fight through several screens that lead to the end screen. Hidden along the way are green question marks that give you a short riddle to solve. These can lead to hidden areas and pickups. There are some bosses to fight and  mission modifiers that slightly change the objective on some levels.

At the end of the game you must fight and defeat Two-Face and The Riddler to win the game.

  • Training mode

Training mode is where the player can play as Batman, Robin or any enemy that can be found in the main game. The player can choose to fight against a CPU opponent, a second player or they can team up to with another player to fight the enemy.

  • Total game play - 2hrs main game
The main component of this game is the story mode. This mode is quite difficult and most likely will have the player retry several times. You can use cheats to choose a level instead of restarting but from start to finish the game is about 2 hours in duration.

Shanwow's Review

Story and Gameplay: 1 point

Batman Forever is a movie game and follows a similar storyline to that. It is narrated mainly through the use of the Batcomputer between levels. These communications are delivered in plain all caps text but they summarize what is going on and what you must achieve.

I found the story to be told well enough but it was rather boring having to read all the text with the same music playing until I was finished. There isn't much else that puts the story together so it ends up feeling a bit lazy.

This is a very ambitious game, it boasts to have over 125 moves and gadgets plus the ability and it plays like a really slow moving platformer that tries to be a little 3D. The idea is great in writing but on screen it really isn't.

Batman moves terribly slow through dark and average 3D levels that hurt your brain as you try to find out why you can't progress. Progress is often blocked by waves of repetitive enemies that are designed to over power you or worse exits that can't be seen easily and require a special controller input to use. The game is 2 hours long and it is almost impossible to finish unless you master all the moves and pretty much remember everything else about the mazes and silly riddles.

Controls and Features: 1 point

The controls for this game are quite annoying to be honest and change in level as you progress through the story. The switch into fights swaps the controller layout which did catch me off guard a few times.

To be honest the inflated move list is too annoying to learn and is a real problem with the game. It's not a simplistic Batman beat 'em up like the previous title Batman Returns and relies on the moves.

When it comes to movement the control input is fast and responsive but because you are required to often use a sequence of inputs the advanced moves are often missed because of the d-pad press slightly diagonal.

The training mode is good for a learning tool but you are still required to learn the inputs from another source. It's best if you look for the move list online and practice to find what suits you.

The two player allowance for this game isn't bad and it does provide that little bit of competitiveness which may save this game for some collectors.

Design and Difficulty: 1 point

The gameplay for this game is quite repetitive and just feels like it drags on forever as you face off against clones. The fights are boring and it is annoying having to "hold on" between screens.

Upside is that it has a a pretty fun soundtrack made up of synth like tunes that fill in the space between the sounds of fist impacts. The sound effects are great for this genre and still have a comical touch when the game feels a little more serious.

The character design isn't the worst either. It uses a similar technique to the Mortal Kombat games and gives the characters a better look when they move on screen. It adds a slight movie feel to the design.

Batman Forever is a reasonably hard game and I would rate it 8-10.

The main reason is because of it's attempt to be complexed and layered with it's move list. You don't need all those moves in a game like this but because of the ambitious idea the enemies also have stronger moves which overpower you in some situations.

Also your lives and continues are very limited which makes it critical to learn how to fight. There are also no barely any items in game that will offer help along the way unless you find secret areas that are very well hidden.

Fun and Summary: ðŸ‘Ž

Batman Forever is straight up not a fun game to play for me. The main mode is just too hard to complete without the aids of level select cheat. It has too many elements crammed in to make it something amazing which accidently turned this game into a real fail in my opinion.

Some people might enjoy the co op and head to head side of it but that has it's limits as well.

Issues:
  • Easy is too hard
  • No continues
  • Confusing level designs
  • To many moves to learn
